Brandon Marshall Seeks Apology After Being Cleared In Nightclub Incident

Chicago Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall has been cleared of any wrongdoing in the incident that occurred earlier this offseason at a New York City nightclub, but now he's seeking an apology for the false accusations that were levied against him. As Marshall tells Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun Times, he thinks accuser owes it to him:

I’m really disappointed that it happened. In every situation, you have to look at how you contributed to that situation. But she publicly went out and accused me of these things, and I felt she should have publicly apologized for what she did. She saw an opportunity — maybe a financial opportunity — and it just didn’t work out because of the surveillance cameras that were there. I’ve worked hard to change some things in my life, but I can’t have things like that happen.

Back in March, Marshall was accused by Christin Myles, as 24-year-old woman, of punching her in the face during an altercation. He vehemently denied the allegations from the beginning, and it never appeared that there was substantial evidence to charge the wide receiver. He's about to begin his first season as a Bear after being acquired from Miami.

Brandon Marshall Will Likely Avoid Charges In Nightclub Incident Investigation

When the Chicago Bears acquired wide receiver Brandon Marshall from the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a pair of third round picks during the 2012 NFL offseason, they knew there was a cloud hanging over the talented receiver at the time. It appears that dark cloud will be lifted away very soon. Days before the trade, Marshall was reportedly involved in an altercation in March at a New York club where his wife was allegedly struck in the face by a bottle of liquor, but according to ESPN Chicago, New York police have failed to find evidence against the WR and it's likely the investigation will be closed without any charges being filed against Marshall.

The Bears' prize acquisition has allowed the legal process to play out, but he did mention in a radio interview that he expects to be cleared of any wrongdoing He came off as very open and honest during his introductory press conference back in March and noted at the time that he did not expect to face a suspension from the NFL for the incident, and he sounded level-headed once again in his latest interview with "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on ESPN 1000, saying:

"When you go through things that I've been through it makes you a bigger target. Not only am I an NFL player, I'm an NFL player that has had trouble in the past. Whenever I step out the target on my back is pretty much bigger than 90 percent, 95 percent of the guys in the league because of who I am and what I've been through."

"The situation in New York, it's unfortunate. You never want to see anyone get hurt, but just the allegation of me balling my fist up and hitting a woman is just a lie. When the judicial system takes its course I'm very confident I will be cleared of any wrongdoing...My wife was the victim in this situation."

In the meantime, Jay Cutler is working on getting up to speed with Marshall in team OTAs.

Brandon Marshall Rumors: Dolphins Would Have Released WR If Bears Hadn't Offered Two Picks In Trade

The Chicago Bears and GM Phil Emery no doubt feel they got a great deal when they traded two third-round picks to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for pro bowl wide receiver Brandon Marshall, but there is another potential layer to this story that suggests it could have been an even better deal for the Bears. Izzy Gould of the South Florida Sentiel has reported that when Dolphins team owner Steve Ross reached out upset fans on Thursday night, he suggested that Brandon Marshall would have been released if the Bears hadn't stepped up with their offer.

The information comes through a quote from one of the protesting fans, long-time season ticket holder Jason Lawrence, who spoke with Mr. Ross via conference call and then sat down for an interview with Gould:

"[Ross] said they had been shopping [Marhsall] for a couple weeks," Lawrence said. "Nobody would return their phone calls about getting him. If Chicago didn't take [Marshall] ... they would have ended up cutting him very shortly after that, and got nothing."

After the two teams consummated the trade last week, news emerged that Marshall had been accused of punching a 24-year old woman in the face outside a New York nightclub, and even though both the Bears and Dolphins claimed to know about the incident before the trade was made, this after-the-fact talk from Ross about potentially releasing the troubled wide receiver to protect "team morale" suggests the Dolphins may have had a better grasp on the issue.

Ultimately the Bears still got a good deal if Marshall performs anywhere near the levels he has over the last few seasons, and they got a great deal if he can recapture the magic he and Jay Cutler shared back in Denver. Even so, it's interesting to consider the possibility that they could have kept both third-round picks while still getting Marshall in a Bears uniform.

Brandon Marshall Press Conference: Bears WR Incredibly Open And Honest In Meeting With Media

The Chicago Bears acquired wide receiver Brandon Marshall from the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a pair of third round picks on Tuesday, and he formally introduced himself to the Chicago media on Friday morning along with free agent pickup quarterback Jason Campbell. Marshall sounded thoughtful, emotional and very appreciative for the opportunity to reunite with Jay Cutler, but he declined to comment on an altercation at a New York club where his wife was allegedly struck in the face by a bottle of liquor on the advice of his attorney, Harvey Steinberg.

He opened by thanking the McCaskey family for his current opportunity, saying "it's a very special moment for me, couldn't ask for a better situation...It's a dream. My family is very excited." From there he gave praise to the Dolphins organization and head coach Tony Sporano for contributing to his growth as a person and as a football player.

When Jay Cutler's name came up, Marshall said he and Cutler "have a bond on and off the field," can "communicate without even talking" and that "the chemistry we have on the field is amazing." The wide receiver kept everything in perspective, however, and mentioned that his No. 1 goal for this season is to be nominated for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award, and that his calling is to use The Brandon Marshall Foundation to educate people and break the stigma about mental illness.

The entire process was an exercise in humility and thoughtful reflection for Marshall, as he gave his longest answer about mental health issues and his goal of helping repair communities and families through his charitable work. He added: "this is the perfect time to show everyone the progress I have made." Marshall does not believe he will face a suspension from the NFL for the recent off-season incident in New York. Furthermore, he thinks the Bears are ready to compete for a Super Bowl now: "This team is ready to win. I'm just walking into a great situation. This team is ready to win. I just have to play my role."

So far as introductory press conferences go, this one actually carries some appeal. News spread just hours after the Bears acquired Marshall that the troubled wide receiver had been accused of punching a 24-year old woman in the face outside a New York nightclub on Saturday night. According to reports, both the Bears and Dolphins knew of the incident before the trade was made.

Reporters will certainly have questions for Marshall on the incident.

Brandon Marshall Trade: Marshall Accused Of Hitting Woman At Club

Nothing is ever simple in the world of new Chicago Bears WR Brandon Marshall. A day after Marshall admitted to being involved in an altercation at a New York club after his wife was allegedly struck in the face by a bottle of liquor, the New York Post is reporting that Marshall is being accused of punching a woman in the face at presumably the same club.

According to the Post, a woman named Christin Myles was attempting to return to the upper floor of the Manhattan club Marquee when she was denied entry because Marshall and an unnamed football player were engaged in a fight and were in the process of being thrown out. While outside of the club, Myles' friends were arguing with Marshall's group as well as that of the other player when Marshall allegedly struck Myles in the face, leaving her with a black left eye. Myles has filed charges, but it is unclear if Marshall intentionally hit her, or if he had intended to punch one of her friends.

It's also unclear how, or if, this incident is related to the one involving Marshall's wife, though more details will presumably emerge in the coming days and weeks. According to Bears GM Phil Emery, the incident was not a secret when Chicago completed the trade:

"Both the Bears and Dolphins were aware of what occurred over the weekend. We decided to move forward with the trade. We have high expectations for Brandon as a Bear," Emery said.

(via ESPN Chicago)

Marshall has been one of the most productive wide receivers in the NFL since entering the league, but his on-field play has often been overshadowed by his off-field incidents. He was dealt from the Denver Broncos to the Miami Dolphins because he had worn out his welcome in the Mile High City, and while in Miami he was stabbed in the stomach by his wife. He also reportedly spiked a ball off of teammate Vontae Davis' face when Davis showed up to a practice late and hungover.

Brandon Marshall's Wife Injured While Couple Leaves Club, According To Agent

Just hours after being acquired from the Miami Dolphins, ESPN's Adam Schefter has reported that Chicago Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall was apparently involved in an altercation recently in New York City that could ultimately be reviewed by the NFL.

FOX Sports' Jay Glazer has a statement from Marshall's attorney about the situation, which doesn't appear to be as bad as it could've been:

On March 12, 2012, Brandon Marshall was the key note speaker at a charitable event in New York. After the event was over he, his wife and close friends attended a function at a local club. While at the function a fight broke out NOT involving Mr. Marshall or his friends. While attempting to leave to avoid the melee Mrs. Marshall was struck in the face by a thrown bottle. She suffered serious injury. While attempting to leave and take his wife to the hospital, the mayhem continued outside. Finally Mr. Marshall was able to take his wife to the hospital where she was treated for serious injuries. Mr. Marshall is hoping to assist authorities in regards to this matter.

From gleaning the statement, it appears that Marshall was primarily trying to avoid having any involvement in the altercation. At this point, it's unclear whether the Bears or the NFL will pursue any sort of investigation into the incident, but it doesn't appear that Marshall has done anything particularly wrong.

Hopefully his wife will be able to recover quickly from whatever injuries she sustained and this won't have any sort of impact on Marshall's long-term standing with his new team.

Brandon Marshall Trade: Wide Receiver Will Wear No. 15 With Bears

Earlier on Tuesday, the Chicago Bears made a much-needed improvement to the team's receiving corps by acquiring WR Brandon Marshall from the Miami Dolphins in exchange for two third-round draft picks. The move also reunites Marshall with quarterback Jay Cutler, as the two used to be teammates in Denver.

Marshall wore the No. 15 in Denver, then switched to No. 19 in Miami. The Bears have announced that he will return to No. 15 in Chicago.

Brandon Marshall Trade: The Bears Welcome Their Newest Receiver Via Twitter

It's been a little over two hours since it was first reported that the Chicago Bears had traded a pair of third round draft picks to the Miami Dolphins for wide receiver Brandon Marshall, but the new car smell hasn't even started to disappear yet.

It's a huge day for the Bears, quarterback Jay Cutler, and their fans, and it'll be enough to keep the football-crazed denizens of Chicago floating on Cloud 9 for the rest of the offseason, even if a few of the other moves the Bears apparently have in the works fall through. It's a big-time trade that instantly pumps life into the franchise after a disappointing end to last season.

A few of the Bears took to Twitter to welcome their newest teammate. Here's what star linebacker Lance Briggs had to say:

Running back Matt Forte also welcomed Marshall.

Cutler, who is fairly active on Twitter, hasn't weighted in yet, but his evil counterpart has in classic NSFW fashion.

Here's a few more relevant tweets that should excite Bears fans. From reporter Zach Zaidman:

More stats:

Bask in it, Chicago. This is probably the best receiver in franchise history.

Brandon Marshall Trade: Bears Acquire Dolphins Wide Receiver For Draft Picks

The Chicago Bears have reported acquired wide receiver Brandon Marshall in exchange for two draft picks:

Marshall played for the Denver Broncos from 2006 through 2009, serving as now-Bears QB Jay Cutler's primary target in each of those season. Marshall has compiled 6247 receiving yards in his career, catching over 1000 yards in each of the last five years.

In 2010, the Denver Broncos traded Marshall to the Miami Dolphins for two second-round draft picks. Marshall then signed a four-year, $47.5 million extension, the last two years of which he will serve in Chicago now.
