Chicago Bears, Lovie Smith keep quiet on possible contract extension

Matthew Emmons-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

Contrary to a report, the Bears and Lovie Smith are not discussing an extension, according to his agent.

The Chicago Bears and head coach Lovie Smith are not currently discussing a contract extension, according to Smith's agent and son Matthew Smith. Terry Boers of WSCR 670 in Chicago reported earlier this week that an anonymous source told him that Smith and the team had begun talks of a contract extension.

Smith's current contract, signed in February of last year, lasts through the 2013 season. Smith's agent said that the head coach is focused on the season and would not discuss his contract with the Bears until after this year. The Bears have looked like one of the best teams in the NFC in 2012 and were on track for a playoff appearance in 2011 before injuries to Jay Cutler and Matt Forte derailed the season.

Smith's career record as a head coach in the NFL is 75-58, and he's led the Bears to three playoff appearances and one showing the Super Bowl.
