Bears Vs. Chargers Score Update: Defense Keys Fifth Consecutive Victory

The combination of an efficient effort from Jay Cutler and a dominant performance from the defensive unit proved to be enough to lead the Chicago Bears to a convincing 31-20 victory over the reeling San Diego Chargers.

Cutler continued his solid play in the win over San Diego, completing 18/31 for 286 yards and 2 TD's. Cutler hooked up with Johnny Knox and Kellen Davis for TD passes and also scored on a one yard TD run. With Matt Forte and Marion Barber struggling to get anything going, Cutler completed throws to eight different receivers.

The Bears defense was simply remarkable in the second half, dominating the Chargers offense following a TD throw from Philip Rivers to Vincent Jackson early in the third quarter. The defense intercepted Rivers twice in the final quarter, and in one of the most amazing stats you will ever see, held the Chargers to 0 total yards in the fourth quarter.

Chicago will look to pick up its sixth consecutive victory when it hosts Oakland on Sunday. The Chargers will hope to end their five-game losing streak when they host Denver in a key AFC West matchup on Sunday.

Bears Vs. Chargers Score Update: Chicago Jumps Out To 31-20 Lead

The Chicago Bears continue to play excellent football on both sides of the all, as they hold a 31-20 lead over the San Diego Chargers early in the fourth quarter.

Chicago responded to a TD by the Chargers early in the third quarter with an excellent 83-yard TD drive. The drive was capped off by Jay Cutler, who scrambled into the end zone from a yard out. The Bears extended their lead later in the third quarter, when Jay Cutler hooked up with Johnny Knox for a 24-yard TD.

The Chicago defense delivered a key turnover in the third quarter, forcing San Diego RB Ryan Matthews to fumble on his own 34 yard line. The Bears took advantage of the fumble just a couple plays later on the Cutler TD pass to Knox.

Bears Vs. Chargers Score Update: Bears Take 17-10 Halftime Lead

After a low-scoring opening quarter, it seemed this matchup between the Chicago Bears and the San Diego Chargers was destined to be a defensive battle. However, both teams found a bit of offensive rhythm in the second quarter, with the Bears leading 17-10 heading into the half.

Chicago utilized two impressive drives to find the endzone in the second quarter. The first drive was capped off by a strong TD run from Marion Barber, who scored from one yard out. The Chargers answered with their own TD drive, as Philip Rivers hooked up with Antonio Gates for a TD.

The Bears offense responded in impressive fashion to the Chargers TD, as Jay Cutler led the Bears down the field for another score in the final minutes of the half. After it appeared that Earl Bennett had found the end zone, the initial call of TD was overturned. However, Chicago still managed to take the momentum heading into the half, as Cutler hooked up with Kellen Davis for a TD pass.

Chargers Vs. Bears Score Update: Chicago, San Diego Tied 3-3 After One Quarter

The Chicago Bears are tied 3-3 with the San Diego Chargers after one quarter at Soldier Field, as the two teams traded field goals in a relatively uneventful first period. There were a couple of longer plays, including a nice 31-yard pass from Jay Cutler to Johnny Knox, but ultimate neither team could score a touchdown or force a turnover.

The Chargers initially took the lead on a 28-yard field goal from kicker Nick Novak, finishing off a 47-yard drive, but the Bears responded with a field goal of their own on the following possession. Chicago started back at its own 14 on that drive, but Cutler carried them on a nine-play, 62-yard drive to set up a 42-yard field goal for Bears kicker Robbie Gould.

The offense hasn't really gotten going for Chicago, yet, as Cutler's only 4-of-9 for 61 yards while Matt Forte has been limited to only seven yards on his first five carries. San Diego has been a bit better so far, especially on the run with Ryan Mathews covering 34 yards on his first six carries.

The Bears are going to need to tighten things up for the remainder of this game, because so far the defense really hasn't taken advantage of a beleaguered Chargers offensive line. Without the offense running on all cylinders, the Bears defense is really going to have to limit what Philip Rivers and Mathews can do going forward. Early in the second quarter, San Diego currently has the ball near midfield.

Chargers Injury Report And Inactives List, Week 11: Five Starters Inactive Against Chicago

The San Diego Chargers have a huge game this week against the Chicago Bears as they hope to keep pace in the shockingly competitive AFC West, but they're going to be doing so at far less than full strength. The team recently announced its inactives list for the game, and five different starters won't be suiting up.

Here's the full list of inactives, reported by Peggy Kusinski of NBC Chicago:

  • WR Malcom Floyd
  • OG Kris Dielman
  • OG Louis Vasquez
  • OT Marcus McNeil
  • CB Marcus Gilchrist
  • WR Bryan Walters
  • OG Tyronne Green
  • The key guys missing here are Floyd, Vasquez, Dielman and McNeil. They're also starting Antwan Barnes in place of Shaun Phillips, who is still recovering from a foot injury. The Chargers are seriously undermanned along the offensive line right now, so expect the Bears to be aggressive to trying to pressure San Diego quarterback Philip Rivers.

Bears Injury Report And Inactives List, Week 11: D.J. Moore Out Against San Diego

The Chicago Bears are hosting the San Diego Chargers on Sunday afternoon as they hope to win for the fifth consecutive time, but they'll be doing so without key defensive back D.J. Moore. The recently released a full inactives list for Sunday's game and Moore is on it, so the Bears secondary will be without its nickelback as it faces Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers.

Here's the full inactives list:

  • CB D.J. Moore
  • QB Nathan Enderle
  • OG Ricky Henry
  • DT Matt Toeaina
  • TE Andre Smith
  • DE Chauncey Davis
  • LB Jabara Williams
  • It's been an impressive year for Moore, a 24-year-old in his third season out of Vanderbilt. He's accumulated 37 tackles, 6 passes defended and 3 interceptions so far this season, including one that he returned for a touchdown. It's also worth noting that defensive end Corey Wootton is active and expected to play for the first time in a while.

Bears WR Earl Bennett, Orange Cleats Will Be Banned From Field

Bears WR Earl Bennett has already been fined twice by the NFL for wearing neon orange cleats that violate the league's uniform policy, and despite speculation that he would merely face escalating fines if he continued to wear the cleats, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported today that Bennett would be barred from stepping on the field today if he was wearing the cleats.

It's unclear at the moment whether Bennett will push issue, but needless to say that the Bears need him in the line up today when they face the San Diego Chargers. Since returning from a chest injury in Week 9, Bennett has been the Bears leading receiver in each of the past two games.

Matt Forte Fantasy Projection: Forte Projected As A Top Back In Week 11

Though Matt Forte is coming off of a relatively lackluster performance in Week 10, the Bears' star running back is an automatic start in Week 11 vs. the San Diego Chargers. Forte only ran for 64 yards in last week's victory over the Detroit Lions, but he augmented that middling rushing total with a crucial touchdown.

The Chargers rush defense is in the bottom half of the league this year, and numberFire.com projects Forte for 120 total yards on Sunday, which would be one of the top three performances in Week 11. If anything should give Forte owners any pause, it's that despite giving up over 120 yards per game on the ground this season, the Chargers have only allowed five rushing touchdowns all year. That alone, though, is not nearly enough to think about benching Forte.

Jay Cutler Fantasy Projection: Cutler A Solid Play In Week 11

During the Bears' four game win streak, Jay Cutler's play from a fantasy standpoint has been all over the place. In weeks 6 and 9, Cutler threw for over 200 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. In Week 7 vs. Tampa Bay, Cutler threw for 226 yards and a touchdown, but he dragged his fantasy production down with two interceptions, and in last week's victory over the Detroit Lions, Cutler threw for only 123 yards and no touchdowns as the Bears' defense powered the team to victory.

In Week 11, numberFire.com projects Cutler as a top 10 quarterback, making him a solid starter in any fantasy format. Against the Chargers solid passing defense, Cutler is projected for 239 yards, and if he can add a touchdown or two, he will reward fantasy owners that give him a start.

San Diego Chargers Injury Report, Week 11: Malcom Floyd, Marcus McNeill Out

The Chicago Bears (6-3) square off against the San Diego Chargers (4-5) this Sunday afternoon at 3:15 p.m. as they begin their four-game tour through the AFC West division.

Unlike the relatively healthy Bears -- whose injures have mostly come on the offensive line, including the Gabe Carimi injury and the Chris Williams injury -- the Chargers injuries span the whole roster and include major contributors.

The Chargers No. 2 wide receiver Malcom Floyd and starting left tackle Marcus McNeill have both been ruled out of Sunday's game. Floyd has over 400 yards receiving this year despite missing the last two Chargers games.

Also likely to be without the services of two other starting offensive lineman, LG Tyronne Green (doubtful) and RG Louis Vasquez (doubtful), the Chargers may have to deploy a makeshift line on Sunday. If both guards are indeed unable to play on Sunday, the Bears defense -- which is tied for fourth in the league with 13 interceptions -- may be able to harass quarterback Phillip Rivers with uncommon ease.

With LB Takeo Spikes (probable), DT and former Bear Antonio Garay (questionable), LB Shaun Phillips (out), and SS Steve Gregory (probable) all injured, the Chargers defense promises to be replete with injured starters or backups, giving the Bears offense, which has scored a sixth-best 26.3 points per game, a significant edge.

Chicago Bears Week 11 Injury Report: Matt Forte, Devin Hester Probable; Matt Toeaina Cleared

The Chicago Bears injury report is out for their Week 11 matchup against the San Diego Chargers (4-5). The Bears (6-3) should have the services of All-Pro kick returner Devin Hester, who returned his12th punt for a touchdown last Sunday against the Detroit Lions.

Hester has been struggling with an ankle injury since the team's game against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 10 and has been limited in practice throughout the week, but is listed as probable for Sunday.

The Bears star running back, Matt Forte, was also listed as probable after being limited in only Wednesday's practice, and he should be able to play.

The defense should have defensive tackle Matt Toeaina back in the line rotation as Toeaina has practiced all week and was removed from the injury report this Friday. The Samoan starting lineman has been struggling with a knee injury this season, limiting him to six games this year.

Julius Peppers and Lance Briggs both made appearances on the injury report again this week, but since both have not missed any games despite their injuries in past weeks, it seems likely they will play again this week too.

Here is the full Bears Week 11 injury report, via their official website:

Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions Combine For Over $60,000 In Fines

Last Sunday's game between the Detroit Lions and the Chicago Bears cost Lions more than just their sole lead in the Wild Card race. After a hotly contested game involving a team-wide brawl on the field, the NFL has levied fines against at least six different players.

The list includes:

Player Reason Amount
D.J. Moore fight $15,000
Nick Fairley roughing the passer $15,000
Earl Bennett uniform (orange shoes) $10,000
Matthew Stafford fight $7,500
Rob Sims late hit $7,500
Kyle Vanden Bosch fight $7,500

WR Earl Bennett wore orange shoes for a second consecutive game, wearing the un-allowed footwear since he first returned from an injury last week against the Philadelphia Eagles.

In the second half of the Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions game, defensive tackle Nick Fairley tackled Jay Cutler, driving him into the ground well after the Bears quarterback had thrown the ball. The play drew a personal foul penalty and also a hefty fine, but it also precipitated much of the later fighting which resulted in the other three fight fines.

Chicago Bears Injury Update: Bears Place Rookie OL Gabe Carimi On IR

According the official website of the Chicago Bears, the Bears have placed rookie right tackle Gabe Carimi on the injured reserve list, meaning his 2011 rookie season is over.

Carimi had arthroscopic surgery on his knee last Friday and has not played for nine weeks. Carimi, who offensive line coach Mike Tice said was the Bears' "best lineman," was a first round draft pick in the 2011 NFL Draft and had started at right tackle on opening weekend.

The Bears have already placed one offensive lineman on the IR this week when starting right guard Chris William when down with a wrist injury. Lance Louis has filled in admirably at right tackle during Carimi's absence, and without Chris Williams, the Bears appear likely to turn to second-year lineman Edwin Williams.

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford, DE Kyle Vanden Bosch Fined $7,500

Earlier today, the NFL announced that Chicago Bears cornerback D.J. Moore was fined $15,000 for attacking Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford after the whistle on Sunday's Bears-Lions game. Now, word has come out that the NFL has also fined Stafford and DE Kyle Vanden Bosch, each worth $7,500 -- half of Moore's fine.

Stafford instigated the event, tackling Moore by his helmet during an interception return in which Moore was attempting to block Stafford. Then, after being thrown to the ground, Moore jumped back to his feet and dove at Stafford, resulting in a team-wide brawl.

Following the fight, Moore received a personal foul penalty and was ejected from the game, earning a standing ovation from Bears fans.

The league, interestingly, fined Moore, Stafford, and Vanden Bosch beneath the minimum-scheduled fine for fighting -- $25,000. All fines levied by the NFL go to NFL charities.

Bears Cornerback D.J. Moore Fined $15,000 For Role In Week 10 Brawl, According To Report

Insult has been added to injury. Chicago Bears CB D.J. Moorewho may miss Sunday's game with an ankle injury he sustained in practice on Wednesday, will certainly miss the $15,000 he has been ordered to pay by the NFL for his role in a Week 10 altercation with Detroit Lions QB Matthew Staffordaccording to a report by Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun-Times.

Apparently the league didn't classify the altercation between Stafford and Moore as a 'fight,' because the Detroit Free Press has pointed out the NFL has a higher minimum figure for first time fighters

According to the league's fine schedule, the minimum fine for a first-time fighting offense is $25,000, with players who unnecessarily enter the fighting area and are actively involved in the altercation subject to a $5,000 penalty. Players who unnecessarily enter the fighting area and are not involved in the fight are subject to a $2,500 fine.

The Lions quarterback clearly started the altercation, when he grabbed Moore by the helmet and possibly the facemask as well, and then threw Moore to the ground while the Bears defenders were blocking for an interception return. Moore then jumped up and retaliated, leading to a larger bench-clearing meeting on the field after the play ended.

No news has surfaced on Stafford's fine at this time.

NFL Week 11 Picks And Predictions Update: ESPN Panel Likes Bears To Win Sunday

As noted earlier in the week, NFL experts at SB Nation, Fox Sports, CBS Sports, ESPN and NFL.com all started to show respect for the Chicago Bears in their Week 11 NFL Power Rankings. In preparation for the game between the Chicago Bears and the San Diego Charger on Sunday afternoon, SB Nation Chicago has been gathering expert picks from around the web. The general trend has been heavily in favor of the Bears, and the experts at ESPN are no exception.

ESPN's eight-man panel of experts has a 7-1 split in favor of the Bears, so nearly everyone is finally on board the Bears bandwagon. The only analyst who bucked the trend was Adam Schefter, the second-worst prognosticator on the panel for the season-to-date.

D.J. Moore Injury Update: Bears CB May Miss Game Against San Diego

Chicago Bears cornerback D.J. Moore may end up missing Sunday's game against the San Diego Chargers after missing practice on Thursday with an ankle injury. Head coach Lovie Smith told reporters that Moore injured his ankle during the latter portion of Wednesday's practice.

Moore, 24, is Chicago's starting nickelback in his third year with the team. He's been a key part of the Bears' impressive defense, notching 37 tackles so far this year. He's also intercepted three passes, returning one of them for a touchdown. He got some additional attention last week for his role in a brawl with Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford, but the league hasn't announced any sort of suspension at this time.

Let's hope that Moore doesn't miss the game on Sunday regardless, whether it's due to suspension or this recent injury. Smith added that the team would continue to monitor his status.

NFL Week 11 Picks And Predictions Update: Chicago Bears Picked In Sporting News Game Of The Week

More expert picks continue to roll in for Week 11 matchups in the NFL, and the Chicago Bears continue to get picked to beat the San Diego Chargers on Sunday afternoon. Vinnie Iyer of AOL's Sporting News has released his picks for Week 11, and has the Bears-Chargers matchup listed as his game of the week. Here is his pick and his analysis for the game:

Rivers' line is hampered by injuries, and his key receivers-Vincent Jackson and Antonio Gates-haven't been consistent. Rivers has already tied a career-high with 15 interceptions, and he is bound for multiple picks in this game.

As for the Bears' offense, it won't be anything special-just a whole lot more of running back Matt Forte and quick, efficient downfield throws by Jay Cutler. The Bolts will leave the Windy City all black and blue.

Bears 27, Chargers 17.

Iyer has been pretty accurate so far this year, going 96-50 in his picks for the season-to-date.

NFL Week 11 Picks And Predictions Update: CBS And Yahoo! Panels Like The Bears

As noted earlier in the week, NFL experts at SB Nation, Fox Sports, CBS Sports, ESPN and NFL.com all started to show respect for the Chicago Bears in their Week 11 NFL Power Rankings. For Sunday's matchup with the San Diego Chargers, the expert panels at CBS Sports and Yahoo! have extended their support to the Bears again.

The five-man panel at CBS Sports has a 4-1 split in favor of the Bears, with Pete Prisco being the lone dissenter in the group. The good news for Bears fans is that the three most accurate prognosticators on the panel have all sided with the Bears. Meanwhile, the three-man panel at Yahoo! is unanimously in favor of the Bears.

The Bears have been particularly good at home during Lovie Smith's tenure as head coach, and with the way Philip Rivers and the Chargers have been playing, the experts are finding little reason to doubt the Bears in this game.

Kris Dielman Injury Update: Chargers Place Pro Bowl OT On Injured Reserve

The San Diego Chargers announced on Wednesday that they have placed star offensive tackle Kris Dielman on the injured reserve, officially ending his season. The move comes days before the Chargers face the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field on Sunday night.

Dielman, 30, suffered a concussion while playing the New York Jets on Oct. 23 and is still weeks away from being ready to take the field. The lineman finished the game in which he received the concussion, but suffered a grand mal seizure near the end of the team's charter flight home.

The Chargers claimed that they couldn't see any clear symptoms of a concussion from Dielman during the game, which explains why they didn't pull him. NFL rules regarding how to deal with concussions have become increasingly strict in recent years given research indicating adverse long-term effects of head injuries.

Jay Cutler On Relationship With Philip Rivers: 'I Don't Know Him'

A few years ago, when Philip Rivers was an up-and-coming star for the San Diego Chargers and Jay Cutler was a young gunslinger for the Denver Broncos, the two quarterbacks didn't exactly get together well. You could have said that there was a bit of a rivalry brewing between the two, right up until the Broncos traded Cutler to the Chicago Bears as part of new (and since-departed) head coach Josh McDaniels' attempted to overhaul the organization.

The animosity presumably stemmed from not-so-cordial confrontations like this one that cameras captured on national television a few years ago:

Fast forward a few years, and now Cutler is leading the NFC-contending Bears as they host the struggling Rivers-led Chargers on Sunday afternoon. Asked by reporters on Wednesday whether or not Cutler had "smoothed over" his relationship with Rivers, the star quarterback had some choice words (via Jeff Dickerson of ESPN Chicago):

I don't know him. You have his number or something, maybe we can call him up.

So, yeah. Clearly there's still some animosity brewing between Cutler and Rivers. At least Cutler can remind himself that he's actually been the better quarterback this year.

According to ESPN's new Total QBR statistic, Cutler has been slightly above-average as a quarterback this season, with a 52.8 figure that's good for 14th in the league. Rivers is 22nd with a below average 45.1 figure. The system is designed so that a 50 mark is exactly league average. The Bears are also riding high at 6-3 with a four-game winning streak, while the Chargers are 4-5 and riding a four-game losing streak.

Given how well Cutler's been playing lately, I'm guessing that his focus is solely on winning Sunday's game. Being able to beat Philip Rivers in the process is just gravy.
