The Tim Beckman era in Champaign began with a win this afternoon, as the Illinois Fighting Illini defeated the Western Michigan Broncos 24-7.

Illini quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase led the way for Illinois, throwing for 126 yards, one touchdown, and an interception on 18 attempts, while rushing for 21 yards and another touchdown.

Scheelhaase, though, went down with an ankle injury in the third quarter and was replaced by Reilly O'Toole. O'Toole, a sophomore signalcaller for the Illini, finished the day 2-for-3 with seven yards.

The extent of Scheelhaase's injury remains uncertain.

The biggest play of the day came from Illinois defensive back Ashante Williams, who returned an intercepted Broncos pass for 60 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter, sealing an Illini victory.

Western Michigan struggled significantly on offense, having difficulty generating positive yards and maintaining possession of the football. Broncos quarterback Alex Carder threw two interceptions on the day, gaining 252 yards through the air and throwing for one touchdown and three interceptions. On the ground, Western Michigan's struggles were even more pronounced, as their team rushing total was -7 yards.

Illinois looks to maintain the momentum provided by this win into next Saturday, as the Fighting Illini will travel to Tempe, AZ to face the Arizona State Sun Devils.

Illini Quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase has left the season opening game against the Western Michigan Broncos with an apparent ankle injury suffered in the third quarter.

Per a tweet from Tom Fornelli of CBS Sports, Scheelhaase was taken into the locker room via cart, as he was unable to put weight on his left ankle.

Up until his injury, Scheelhaase was leading his Illinois team successfully in maintaining a double digit lead over Western Michigan. He 11-for-18 on the day with 126 yards, one touchdown and one interception on the afternoon.

Filling in for Scheelhaase is sophomore signalcaller Reilly O'Toole, who has 270 career yards with one touchdown and four interceptions for Illinois. Needless to say, if you're an Illini fan, you'd much rather have Scheelhaase leading this program, not only for this game but for those coming up on the schedule.

The Chicago Bears have announced that running back Harvey Unga, defensive back Isaiah Fey, and running back Armando Allen are now a part of the Bears' practice squad, per a tweet from Chicago Tribune beat writer Vaughn McClure.

Unga is perhaps the most noteworthy of these practice squad players, as he was drafted by Chicago in the 7th round of the 2010 NFL draft after becoming the all time leading rusher at Brigham Young University.

Isaiah Frey was drafted in the 6th round of this year's NFL draft by Chicago as a cornerback. Even though he signed a four-year deal with teh organization, he was waived yesterday.

Armando Allen, an all-purpose back, was a part of Chicago's active roster last winter, as he rushed for 40 yards on 11 carries against the Green Bay Packers in a reserve role in place of injured Matt Forte and Marion Barber.

Other players added to the practice squad, per McClure, are as follows:

Offensive tackle Corey Brandon

Offensive tackle James Brown

Defensive end Aston Whiteside

Quarterback Matt Blanchard

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish truly lived up to their moniker today, as the Golden Domers defeated the Navy Midshipmen by a score of 50-10 in Dublin's Aviva Stadium.

Notre Dame scored early and often, jumping out to a 13-0 lead after the first quarter and a 27-3 lead at the half. Fighting Irish halfbacks Theo Riddick and George Atkinson III combined for 206 yards and four touchdowns on the ground while quarterback Everett Golson passed for 144 yards, a touchdown, and an interception on 12 completions and 18 attempts.

Navy's option attack struggled significantly against the Irish defense, gaining 293 total yards while committing four turnovers. Surprisingly, given the team's strengths, the Mids struggled to move the ball on the ground, earning only 101 total yards rushing on 38 total team carries. The lone bright spot on the offense was wideout Shawn Lynch, who caught four passes for 87 yards and a touchdown.

Upon their return from Ireland, Notre Dame will host the Purdue Boilermakers at home while Navy will have a bye week before travelling to Penn State.
