Chicago Bears, Jay Cutler Haven't Discussed Contract Extension

Jay Cutler is a free agent after the 2013 season, and according to Michael C. Wright of ESPN Chicago, Cutler and the Bears have not yet discussed a contract extension for the quarterback. Cutler will earn over $15 million in base salary over the next two seasons, and will almost certainly be looking for comparable money, if not a raise, with his next contract.

Whether new Bears GM Phil Emery wants to do that remains unknown, and likely will depend on how Cutler does this season. Wright theorizes that the team will begin negotiations in earnest at the end of this season so that the situation may be resolved heading into the final year of his contract. The Bears, according to Wright, will have over $50 million in cap room heading into the 2014 season.
