White Sox Recall Right-Hander Dylan Axelrod From Double-A

The Chicago White Sox increased their roster to 33 players on Tuesday afternoon before their game with Minnesota, as the team recalled pitcher Dylan Axelrod from Double-A Birmingham.

The 27-year-old Axelrod owns a 4.74 earned-run average in 15 career appearances with the White Sox, and will add much-needed depth to manager Robin Ventura's pitching staff while the team deals with ailing starter Gavin Floyd. A 30th round pick by the San Diego Padres out of UC Irvine in 2007, Axelrod was ranked the 24th-best prospect in Chicago's organization by Baseball America after the 2011 season.

Axelrod clearly impressed coaches with his most recent performance at the big league level after holding the Orioles to just one run on three hits over 7-1/3 innings in a spot-start on Aug. 29. The six-foot Axelrod is expected to provide long-inning relief in the short-term as he battles with Hector Santiago for a spot-starting gig, and could factor into the team's rotation down the stretch.
