Demetrius Jackson commits to Notre Dame basketball

The Fighting Irish made a splash on Thursday as the No. 4 point guard in the country committed to Notre Dame.

The decision for Demetrius Jackson was between Notre Dame and Illinois, and the guard ultimately decided to stay close to home and play for the Irish -- a stone's throw from where he grew up in Mishawaka, Ind.

In getting a commitment from Jackson, Notre Dame added to its successful recruiting campaign that already saw head coach Mike Bray add fellow lauded recruits V.J. Beachem and Steve Vasturia. Given the possibility that the school could see it's basketball program in the ACC in the next 12-24 months, it's a good sign for the Fighting Irish that they have secured high-end talent prior to meeting up with powerhouses like Duke and North Carolina.

Jackson will be asked to become heir apparent for Eric Atkins, the senior Notre Dame point guard who finished the 2011-12 season averaging 12.1 points and 4.1 assists. He was vital not only in the Irish's success on the court, but was a leader off the court as well. Time will tell whether Jackson can have a similar impact.
