White Sox Vs. Twins Final Score: Chicago Cruises To 9-2 Win

The Chicago White Sox handled the Minnesota Twins with ease on Sunday, picking up a 9-2 win at Target Field.

The Twins jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Joe Mauer hit a home run. Chicago starter Jake Peavy then settled in, however, and allowed just two runs on four hits in six innings while striking out six.

The White Sox jumped ahead 3-1 behind a Dewayne Wise sac fly and a pair of RBI doubles from Kevin Youkilis and Dayan Viciedo.

After the Twins cut the score to 3-2, the White Sox put the game away with a big six-run sixth inning, highlighted by home runs from Viciedo and Adam Dunn.

The White Sox now head home for an important makeup game against the Detroit Tigers on Monday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 CT.

MLB Standings: White Sox Hold One-Game Lead In AL Central

Looking to return to the postseason in 2012, the Chicago White Sox hold a one-game lead over the Detroit Tigers in the AL Central standings entering Sunday's action. With just a few weeks left in the season, the Sox are hoping to hold off a surging Detroit team that's won four straight games.

On Sunday, both teams are playing on the road against divisional foes. The White Sox have Jake Peavy taking the mound against the Minnesota Twins, while the Tigers have Rick Porcello facing the Cleveland Indians and a struggling Ubaldo Jimenez.

The White Sox and Tigers only have one game remaining against one another this season, a make-up game on Monday at U.S. Cellular Field. After that game, Chicago finishes the season with three games against the Angels, three games against the Royals, three games against the Rays and six games against the Indians.

Matt Thornton Seals White Sox Victory Over Twins

In a crucial game Saturday with the White Sox looking to extend their lead in the AL Central, closer Addison Reed loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth and put a 3-run Chicago lead in serious jeopardy.

Matt Thornton came in to finish the job.

Thornton faced Twins first baseman Justin Morneau with the bases loaded but induced a ground-ball double play. The Twins scored one, but the threat was essentially over. Thornton got his next batter to ground out as well to end the game with the White Sox on top, 5-3.

Writes Dan Hayes of CSN Chicago, the veteran Thornton knew what he was getting into with Justin Morneau at the plate.

"I'm pretty careful when I face Morneau," Thornton said. "He's a dangerous hitter and I knew what he was trying to do in that situation, obviously, after I saw his first swing. I swayed away from the gameplan talked to AJ about once I saw that first swing. Got fortunate, ground ball to Gordon."

The win proves huge for Chicago's playoff hopes. They currently sit only one game ahead of the second-place Detroit Tigers in the AL Central. The White Sox and Twins close their three-game set Sunday afternoon in Minnesota.

Chris Sale Ignoring Cy Young Talk

Chicago White Sox pitcher Chris Sale (17-6, 2.78 ERA) is one of the leading candidates for this year's American League Cy Young, but he tells Dan Hayes of Comcast Sports Net that awards are not on his mind with his team in the midst of a close race for the AL Central title:

"I don’t pay attention to anything like that," Sale said. "You start paying attention to things like that you get a little selfish and what’s really important slips away. I’m here for this team. I’m not trying to win any awards or anything like that. The only award I want is the big shiny trophy at the end."

Sale is tied with Jered Weaver for second in the AL with 17 wins. He's third in the league in ERA and seventh in the league in strikeouts.

White Sox Vs. Twins Preview: White Sox Look For Second Straight Win

The Chicago White Sox are just about neck-and-neck with the Detroit Tigers in the race for the first place in the A.L. Central, and that makes games against cupcakes like the Minnesota Twins even more important. Chicago will take the field on Saturday vs. the Twins with a one-game lead in the Central, and with Detroit facing the Cleveland Indians this weekend, there is likely little margin for error.

The White Sox won easily on Friday night, and will be looking for similarly smooth sailing on Saturday. Leading them will be Francisco Liriano, who is back from the bullpen and back in Minnesota, where he spent the first six-and-a-half years of his career. Liriano has struggled lately, prompting that momentary move to the bullpen, but he was solid in his one start vs. the Twins this year and has pitched well in his career at Target Field.

He'll be opposed by Twins starter Samuel Deduno, who has morphed into something of an ace in the second half of the season. He's been especially brilliant at home, where his ERA is 2.51 and his batting average against a paltry .162.

First pitch comes at 12:10 p.m. CT, and the game will be broadcast on WGN.

White Sox Vs. Twins Final Score: Chicago Skates To 6-0 Victory

The Detroit Tigers won on Friday night, but so did the Chicago White Sox, thus ensuring that Chicago maintained its one-game lead in the AL Central. The White Sox were led by a solid pitching performance from starter Chris Sale and a scoreless three innings from relievers Brett Myers and Matt Thornton. Sale allowed three hits and struck out five over six innings, earning his 17th win of the season.

The White Sox steadily put runs on the board, scoring a single run in the second, fourth, six and ninth innings and two runs in the seventh. Chicago only mustered two extra-base hits on Friday night: an Alex Rios double and a Kevin Youkilis homer that highlighted the seventh inning.

The two teams will take the field again on Saturday at 12:10 p.m. CT, with Francisco Liriano going up against Samuel Deduno.

Adam Dunn Injury: White Sox Slugger Could Return This Weekend

Chicago White Sox DH Adam Dunn may return to the team's lineup sometime this weekend, manager Robin Ventura told reporters on Friday night. Dunn, who has missed seven straight games, took batting practice on Friday and felt well enough that there is a chance that he will return to the field either Saturday or Sunday against the Minnesota Twins.

Dunn told reporters that he doesn't think he can return to 100% health this season but he will return to the lineup when he can tolerate the pain. Dunn also said that he doesn't believe there's risk of further or permanent damage to his oblique, an aggravation of which led to this current stint of game inactivity.

The White Sox will reevaluate Dunn prior to Saturday's game and if "nothing flares up" he could be back in the lineup by then.
