Cubs Pitcher Chris Volstad Finally Wins, First In 24 Starts

After 24 consecutive winless starts, multiple call-downs to the minor leagues and almost 14 months of futility, Chicago Cubs pitcher Chris Volstad finally won a game.

The incredible 24 start skid, which began on July 17 of last season, was comprised of an 0-14 record and a 5.53 ERA. Including Sunday's contest, the Cubs have now won only two of Volstad's 14 starts this season. With a streak so extreme, inevitably, one has to encounter a great deal of bad luck. So, of course, despite Volstad's dominating performance yesterday, some sort of difficulty was bound to arise--in this case, three hours worth of rain delays including one just before the start of the ninth inning. Rick Gano of the AP writes that when the game was finally called due to rain, no one was more relieved than Volstad.

"The tarp being pulled in the ninth inning, I was, ‘Come on, just get this over with,' " Volstad said. "I got a pretty big welcome, reception whatever you want to call it when they called the game. Everyone was pretty happy. I was pretty happy, as well. ... There is a little sense of relief to get it over with."

Volstad was steadily approaching the major league record of 28 straight winless starts, but he did all he could Sunday, allowing only three hits in 6.2 scoreless innings. He had pitched better of late since being recalled to the Cubs on August 1, and head coach Dale Sveum knew it was only a matter of time.

"Since he's been back, he hasn't been that bad. He's had some good outings," Chicago manager Dave Sveum said of Volstad. "He's pitched much better with a lot more conviction."

Volstad will now look to begin a win streak. His next scheduled start is August 31 against the San Francisco Giants.

Rockies Vs. Cubs Final Score: Chicago Wins 5-0

The Chicago Cubs defeated the Colorado Rockies 5-0 in a rain-shortened game at Wrigley Field on Sunday.

Cubs starter Chris Volstad picked up his first win of 2012 with a solid performance that lasted 6-2/3 innings. He gave up just three hits and finished the day with three strikeouts to go with three walks.

The Cubs offense got the scoring started in the second inning on an RBI groundout by Darwin Barney. Barney picked up his second RBI of the day with a sixth-inning single that scored Starlin Castro. The Cubs took a 2-0 lead into the eighth, where they added three insurance runs. The Rockies would not get a chance to answer in the ninth, as that's when the game was called.

The Cubs improved to 50-77 with the victory.

The Chicago Cubs took a 3-0 lead after Alfonso Soriano scored on an error and Brett Jackson hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning, but the Colorado Rockies scored runs in each of the next three innings to win 4-3.

Cubs pitcher Brooks Raley held the Rockies scoreless through four innings, but gave up a pinch-hit two-run home run to Josh Rutledge in the fifth after Rutledge hit for Colorado pitcher Alex White. Raley's final line was two earned runs in five innings with four strikeouts.

Manny Corpos (0-1, 4.19 ERA) took the loss in relief, giving up a solo home run to Andrew Brown in the sixth. Carlos Gonzalez drove in the decisive run in the seventh on a RBI groundout against pitcher Alex Hinshaw. Hinshaw had relieved Corpas, who had left a runner on base.

Cubs Vs. Rockies Preview: Brooks Raley To Make Fourth Career Start

Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Brooks Raley will be looking on Saturday to further his bid to be part of the team's future when he takes the hill vs. the Colorado Rockies. Raley has made three starts this year (and in his career), posting an ERA of 7.63 and a WHIP of 1.57.

But most of that comes from his first career start, in which he gave up seven earned runs in four innings vs. the San Diego Padres. Since then, he's been a bit better. In two starts vs. the Cincinnati Reds, Raley has given up six earned runs in 11.1 innings, which is better even if it's not great.

The Cubs will be facing Rockies starter Alex White, who has pitched well in his last four starts. In those four starts, White has given up only six earned runs, though he has been handcuffed a bit by Colorado's 75-pitch cap on its starters.

Rockies Vs. Cubs Final Score: Chicago Rallies In Eighth To Defeat Colorado, 5-3

Jeff Samardzija overcame a shaky start to his outing and his Chicago Cubs teammates tagged the Colorado Rockies for three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to win the first game of the weekend series, 5-3, on Friday afternoon at Wrigley Field.

Samardzija gave up solo blasts to Colorado third baseman Chris Nelson and left fielder Carlos Gonzalez in the second and third innings, following the Rockies' first run of the game coming home on a wild pitch in the first.

The Cubs responded with a pair of homers of their own in the fifth inning after left fielder Alfonso Soriano and catcher Welington Castillo went deep off of Colorado starting pitcher Drew Pomeranz. It was Soriano's 23rd long ball of the season.

Center fielder Brett Jackson hit his second homer of the season in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game, before outfielder Joe Mather knocked home the go-ahead run on a single to right center.

The Cubs would add another insurance run in the frame after first baseman Anthony Rizzo scored on a throwing error by Rockies reliever Matt Reynolds.
