Cubs starter Justin Germano gave up six runs (four earned) on seven hits in 5-2/3 innings of work, and the Reds had built an 8-3 lead by the end of the top of the sixth inning. The Cubs mounted a rally from there, eventually pulling to within 9-8 in the bottom of the eighth inning. But Cincinnati picked up an insurance run in the ninth and Aroldis Chapman shut the door on the Cubs in the bottom half of the inning.
Darwin Barney led the Cubs with three hits, while Alfonso Soriano drove in a team-high three runs.
