Stay connected for news and updates

Mariel Zagunis, 2-time gold medal winner in saber fencing for U.S., lost in the semifinals to Kim Jiyeon of Korea, 15-13. Zagunis,a Notre Dame alumni, has been the only woman to win a fencing gold medal in the saber in the past eight years.

In the beginning, Zagunis appeared to be scoring at will, and led by 3-0, 6-1 and 12-5. But Kim was never wavered. Kim came back with five straight points to cut Zagunis's lead to 12-10. Zagunis did strike back to make it 13-10, but that was her last point.

Kim said she made adjustments during the break, saying she used a lot more feints to allow here to catch up with Zagunis
