London 2012 Olympics: Matt Grevers, Northwestern Alumnus, Wins 100m Backstroke Gold

Stay connected for news and updates

Northwestern Wildcats graduate and Chicago native Matt Grevers has grabbed his third Olympic gold medal:

Grevers collected two golds in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, but only did so because he participated in preliminary relay races -- and did not make an appearance in the finals. He also won silver that year in the 100m backstroke, but in the 2012 London Olympics, Grevers managed to win with a time 0.05 seconds slower than his silver-winning Beijing time.

Here is a look at the standings, courtesy of NBCOlympics.com:

RANK LANE ATHLETE TIME DIFF
1 04 Matt Grevers 52.16 -
2 02 Nick Thomas 52.92 +0.76
3 06 Ryosuke Irie
52.97 +0.81
4 05 Camille Lacourt
53.08 +0.92
5 03 Liam Tancock
53.35 +1.19
