2012 John Deere Golf Classic: Zach Johnson Beats Troy Matteson In Playoff

The 2012 John Deere Classic truly lived up to its name on Sunday. Zach Johnson came from behind in the final round to defeat Troy Matteson on the second playoff hole, winning with a overall score of 20-under.

Johnson, the Iowa City native, looked as though he would win in regulation down the stretch, playing tremendous golf. On the back nine, Johnson birdied three of his final six holes while taking what appeared to be an insurmountable lead.

However, Matteson stepped up and knocked in a 60-foot eagle putt on the 17th hole to draw even and eventually send the event into a playoff.

After each player made double-bogey on the first playoff hole, Johnson hit an approach that landed one foot away from the pin, leaving him a tap-in birdie for the win.

Afterward, Johnson was thrilled:

"It just feels awesome," Johnson said. "This tournament has meant so much to me and my family, from when they gave me exemptions to being a part of its board."

Steve Stricker, who had won this event the previous three years, was in the thick of it for most of the day before fading on the final few holes. Stricker ended up 16-under, four shots off the pace.

John Deere Classic Leaderboard: Troy Matteson Leads By One Stroke After Friday

Troy Matteson is still holding the lead at the John Deere Classic with a score of 12-under, but he certainly has some company in his rear-view mirror.

Jeff Maggert and Brian Harman are tied for second after two rounds, with an overall score of 12-under. Maggert played tremendous golf on Friday, shooting a 9-under 62 including a scoreboard that didn't reveal even a single bogey. Harman has been more consistent, again shooting a 65 to stay right in the mix.

Ricky Barnes, Gary Christian, J.J Henry and Robert Garrigus are all tied at 10-under for third place, only two shots off the pace of Matteson.

Steve Stricker, who has won the event each of the past three years, is in good position to make it a fourth straight title. The American is only three shots off the lead after shooting a 4-under on Friday afternoon.

With such a staked field towards the top, the weekend should be quite entertaining.
