Wimbledon 2012: Dan Rubenstein Breaks Down Roger Federer's 17th Title

Roger Federer won his 17th Grand Slam title on Sunday afternoon by defeating Andy Murray for the Wimbledon championship. Murray is an England native and was clearly the fan-favorite at Centre Court, but Federer couldn't be denied from his seventh championship at the All England Club. With the victory, Federer equals Pete Sampras for the most titles at Wimbledon. He will also overtake Novak Djokovic as the No. 1 player in the world, ending Djokovic's 286-week streak as the top-ranked player.

Wimbledon 2012: Roger Federer Defeats Andy Murray For 7th Career Title At The All-England Club

Challenging the local hero Andy Murray, Swiss legend Roger Federer won his seventh career Wimbledon title in four sets on Sunday afternoon at the All England Club in London. Now ranked No. 3 in the world, Federer presumably disappointed many in England with his 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 victory over the Glasgow native.

Murray took the first set of the match before falling behind 2-1 through three sets. He battled early in the fourth to take a 2-1 advantage over Federer, but he dropped the next three games and couldn't come back with Federer leading 4-2.

Trailing 5-4 in the final set of the championship, the crowd was cheering Murray's name in the hopes of a comeback, but Federer quieted those chants while proving that he's still to be considered one of the elite names in men's tennis.

Federer is no longer quite in his prime, but he clearly still has a good deal left in the tank after winning his first major championship since the 2010 Australian Open this week. Even at 30 years old, he was able to handle Murray, who was seeking to become the first British man to win the Wimbledon since 1936.

Wimbledon 2012 Live TV Schedule: Andy Murray Looks To Make History

A British man hasn't won the singles title at Wimbledon since 1936. But with a win today over Roger Federer, Glasgow native Andy Murray can finally break that streak. Federer, of course, is merely one of the greatest players in the history of tennis, and someone who has won Wimbledon six times since 2003. There is a bit of good news for Murray, though: he has an 8-7 record in his career in head-to-head matches vs. Federer.

Federer, also, isn't quite the Roger Federer of old, despite his relative dominance at this year's Wimbledon. At age 30, the Swiss legend is unmistakably on the downswing of his career, and a win today would give him his first major championship since the 2010 Australian Open. Who did Federer beat to claim that title? Andy Murray.

Match date/time: Sunday, July 8, 8:00 a.m. CT

Wimbledon Scores And Results: Serena Williams Claims 5th Wimbledon Singles Title With 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 Win

Serena Williams sparkled in her seventh career Ladies' singles Wimbledon final, and with another impressive performance she knocked off Agnieszka Radwanska in three sets (6-1, 5-7, 6-2) to claim her fifth ladies' singles title at the All England Club.

After a stunning display in her semifinal match against Victoria Azarenka -- where she she broke her own Wimbledon record by hitting 24 aces on serve -- Williams cooled off just a bit with her service game. She still delivered 17 aces but she allowed Radwanska to break her serve twice in the second set.

2012 Wimbledon: Andy Murray Advances To Finals In Men's Singles

With a 3-1 win over No. 5 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Scottish right-hander No. 4 Andy Murray has advanced to face No. 3 Roger Federer in the Wimbledon singles finals.

Murray lost in the Quarterfinals at Roland Garros (the French Open) to No. 7 David Ferrer, but when the setting switched from red clay to Wimbledon's grass, Murray managed to to overcome Ferrer -- again in the Quarterfinals -- and will now play for his 23rd career title.

Scores: Men's Scores | Women's Scores

Murray's semifinal match against Tsonga was not without its unpleasantries, unfortunately. In the third set, Murray hit a near-net shot that connected with Tsonga below the belt, sending the Frenchman to the ground for a few moments of recovery.

Wimbledon 2012 Live TV Schedule

The Round of 16 at Wimbledon 2012 begins on Monday morning, so Sunday offers a rare opportunity for the players still remaining: a day off. The courts at the All England Club will be silent on Sunday, but ABC will be airing highlights of the tournament's action-to-date on Sunday afternoon.

And highlights there are. At the top of the ledger are the surprise eliminations of Rafael Nadal and Venus Williams, both of which will likely be heavily covered. There's also the elimination of Andy Roddick, who fell yesterday to seventh-ranked David Ferrer.

But top ranked Rafael Nadal is still hanging around despite a scare earlier in the tournament, as is Maria Sharapova, the top ranked woman. Brit Andy Murray is still in contention to keep the Wimbledon title in England, and 10th-ranked Mardy Fish is the United State's last hope.

Wimbledon Scores And Results: Andy Roddick Eliminated

After a series of upsets and near-misses plagued the opening week of Wimbledon, the action on Saturday has gone much more according to plan. Higher-seeds have taken care of business, while Andy Roddick saw his run come to an end after opening the match with promise.

Roddick cruised in the opening set against No. 7 seed David Ferrer, winning 6-2 and looking very impressive. However, he was unable to keep up the performance and dropped the next three. While Roddick went out, Mardy Fish, who is the highest-ranked American left in the field, cruised to a 6-3,7-6,7-6 victory over David Goffin of Belgium. Fish will face a much bigger challenge in the 4th round, as he is set to face No. 5 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Juan Martin Del Potro has been impressive on the grass courts so far, as he dispatched Kei Nishikori in three sets. He will face Ferrer in the next round.

After Nadal took the first set 7-6, Rosol responded to win the next two sets, 6-4, 6-4, to put some pressure on the heavily-favored Nadal.
