2012 NBA All-Star Game: Derrick Rose Would Have Liked More Playing Time

Derrick Rose scored 14 points in Sunday night's All-Star Game, but he logged just 18 minutes of playing time, which was the fewest among the East's five starters.

East head coach Tom Thibodeau said he discussed that minutes limit with Rose prior to the game -- Rose has been hampered by back spasms -- but after the game, Rose sounded a bit unsure about why he didn't get to play more.

"At times I wanted to get in there, but Thibs just didn’t put me out there," Rose said. "I think he was worried about my back. I didn’t know, and I didn’t ask him."

It's hard to blame Thibodeau for being cautious considering how hard the Bulls have been hit by injuries this season. Chicago starts the second half of the regular season on Tuesday night against New Orleans.

Derrick Rose Injury: Guard Says His Back Is Feeling Much Better

There's good news on the injury front, as Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose says his back has felt a lot better in recent days. He did not even need to get treatment on it while he was in Orlando for the 2012 NBA All-Star game.

Rose missed several games because of back spasms, and he also missed time earlier in the season with a toe injury.

Deng landed on his wrist during the All-Star game but did not hurt himself.

Luol Deng Uninjured After All-Star Game Fall

Chicago Bulls' forward Luol Deng fell on his injured left wrist late in the first quarter of the 2012 NBA All-Star Game, and though he didn't return to the game, he told reporters on Sunday night that the move was precautionary, and he did not hurt his wrist.

"I just fell on my wrist," he said. "It was nothing. I just fell."

(via ESPN Chicago)

Deng told reporters that East head coach Tom Thibodeau planned on being cautious with his minutes anyway, but both mutually agreed after Deng's fall that it would be best for him to sit out for the rest of the game. Deng said that despite playing only six minutes in his first ever All-Star experience, he still enjoyed the experience.

2012 NBA All-Star Game: Bulls Forward Luol Deng Suffers Minor Injury In 1st Quarter

According to the Tribune's K.C. Johnson, Chicago Bulls forward Luol Deng suffered a wrist injury in the first quarter of Sunday night's All- Star game.

That is the same wrist in which Deng tore a ligament back in January; that injury forced him to sit out for seven games, so the precautions taken Sunday night certainly are understandable. He logged a little over five minutes in the All-Star game and finished 0-2 from the field with one assist.

NBA All-Star Game 2012 MVP: Kevin Durant Named Most Valuable Player

The West prevailed 152-149 over the East in Sunday night's NBA All-Star game, and Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant was a big reason why. The forward led the West with 36 points on 14-25 shooting, including a 3-8 effort from beyond the arc. He also grabbed seven rebounds and had three steals.

With Durant's help, the West built a big second-half lead before the East put together a late rally to put the outcome in jeopardy over the final few minutes. LeBron James was a big part of that rally for the East, and he matched Durant with 36 points.

Kobe Bryant, Blake Griffin and Russell Westbrook also scored over 20 points for the West.

Derrick Rose finished with 14 points for the East, while Luol Deng did not score.

2012 NBA All-Star Game Final Score: West Holds On For 152-149 Win

The Western Conference All-Star team held a 19-point lead at halftime and controlled much of the second half but had to fight off a furious rally by the East in the fourth quarter. The East, which trailed by as many as 21 points in the second half, got to within one point in the late stages but ultimately lost to the West, 152-149.

LeBron James was fantastic for the East during the rally; he scored 36 points on 15-23 shooting for the night. Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose made his presence felt with 14 points on 6-8 shooting, while Dwyane Wade had a triple-double.

Kevin Durant led the West with 36 points; Kobe Bryant added 27.

NBA All-Star Game 2012: West Takes Halftime Lead

As many fans probably expected, the first half of the 2012 NBA All-Star game was high on points and low on defensive effort. Behind a combined 38 points from Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook, the Western Conference has jumped out to an 88-69 lead at the half.

The two representatives of the Chicago Bulls struggled to get anything going in the opening half. Derrick Rose, who saw 10 minutes of action, scored two points on 1/3 shooting and dished out two assists. In six minutes of action, Luol Deng missed both of his shot attempts and dished out one assist. Dwyane Wade led the way for the Eastern Conference with 14 points and seven assists.

Kevin Durant put his full offensive arsenal on display, scoring 21 points on 8/13 shooting in the opening half. His Oklahoma City teammate came off the bench to score 17 points and grab four rebounds. Kobe Bryant scored 14 points, while Blake Griffin added 13 points on five dunks and a three-pointer.

NBA Standings 2012: Chicago Bulls, Miami Heat Dueling For East's Top Spot

After leading the Eastern Conference standings for most of the season thus far, the Chicago Bulls are a half-game behind the Miami Heat as the league's All Star Weekend continues. The Heat currently hold a 27-7 record, tied with the Oklahoma City Thunder for the NBA's best record, while the Bulls are right behind those two with a 27-8 record.

While Chicago hasn't played poorly of late, Miami has been on fire. The Heat have won eight consecutive games going into the break, and 16 of their past 18 games since starting the season 11-5. And those victories haven't really been close, either, with the smallest victory margin during the eight-game win streak is 12 points.

The Bulls have mostly been keeping up with the Heat, though, winning 9 of their past 11 games. Things haven't been easy with reigning MVP Derrick Rose being hobbled frequently, not to mention injuries to other rotation players like Luol Deng, Richard Hamilton and C.J. Watson, but Chicago's been winning regardless.

2012 NBA All-Star Game Time, TV Schedule And More

The 2012 NBA All-Star Game features Derrick Rose and Luol Deng of the Chicago Bulls, but Bulls fans better tune in early if they want to catch a glimpse of either on the court, because it's highly probably that they won't be on for long. Bulls head coach Tom Thibodeau will coach the East All-Stars this year, and with both Rose and Deng having battled injuries this season, he's likely to severely limit the minutes that both players see in the game, even with Deng playing in his first.

Thibodeau's ability to limit the minutes of his own players is one of the underlying advantages (well, maybe the only advantage) of being able to coach in the All-Star game, but he'll also be able to dole out minutes to players like LeBron James and Dwyane Wade of the Miami Heat and Rajon Rondo and Paul Pierce of the Boston Celtics. Of course, Thibodeau isn't going to purposefully run his rivals ragged, but the push-pull will be on everybody's mind.

NBA Slam Dunk Contest 2012 Time, TV Schedule And More

The NBA Slam Dunk Contest certainly lacks the starpower of years past, but the beauty of the event is that the four participants may yet have a classic dunk (or two) in store for us. If there is any true starpower in the event, it's likely being provided by Derrick Williams of the Minnesota Timberwolves, who was last caught on national television crushing dunks on the heads of the Duke Blue Devils.

He'll be joined by Paul George of the Indiana Pacers, Chase Budinger of the Houston Rockets and Jeremy Evans of the Utah Jazz. Neither three is known as a noted dunker, but George is one of the most athletic swingmen in the league and Budinger was on the right end of a few monster dunks while in college.

NBA Three-Point Shootout 2012 Time, TV Schedule and More

Chicago Bulls fans may remain bitter over the fact that Kyle Korver was excluded from the 2012 NBA Three-Point Shootout, but the major starpower taking the court during Saturday night's All-Star festivities will do so during the three contest, without any of the handwringing hanging over the Slam Dunk Contest.

The Three-Point Shootout will be headlined by Kevin Durant, who is replacing the injured Joe Johnson, and Kevin Love, who will suit up in the All-Star game on Sunday night. Orlando Magic sharpshooter Ryan Anderson will certainly have the crowd behind him, a crowd that will be rooting heavily for him to take down reigning champion James Jones and Miami Heat teammate Mario Chalmers. The field will be rounded out by Anthony Morrow of the New Jersey Nets.

Here's the full list of competitiors:

  • Ryan Anderson, Orlando Magic
  • Mario Chalmers, Miami Heat

2012 NBA Rising Star Challenge Result: Kyrie Irving Shines Brightest In Victory

Derrick Rose is indisputably the best point guard in the Eastern Conference, but he may soon have Kyrie Irving nipping at his heels. Irving, who is considered the frontrunner for NBA Rookie of the Year, dazzled the All-Star crowd in Orlando on Friday night, scoring 34 points and making all eight of his three point attempts in Team Chuck's (the squad drafted by Charles Barkley) 146 victory over Team Shaq (the squad drafted by Shaquille O'Neal).

Team Chuck finished the game having shot 64% from the field and 55% (11-20) from three, though only MarShon Brooks and Paul George hit shots from long range besides Irving. Team Shaq, on the other hand, was surprisingly deadly from three, shooting 29% on a whopping 41 attempts. Team Shaq had the biggest stars in the event, which was more of a cures than a blessing, as Jeremy Lin and Blake Griffin only combined to play less than 20 minutes on the night.

Griffin will also take the court in the big boy All-Star game on Sunday, and Lin will reportedly make an appearance or two in tomorrow night's All-Star festivities.

2012 NBA Rising Stars Challenge: Kyrie Irving Leads Team Chuck To Halftime Lead

The NBA Rising Stars Challenge no longer pits the NBA's best rookies against its best sophomore, instead choosing to separate the players based on a draft run by Charles Barkley and Shaquille O'Neal. In the first half of tonight's game, it's Barkley's squad— Team Chuck— that leads 77-65 thanks to the play of Kyrie Irving and some sharp long range shooting.

Irving leads all scorers with 18 points, which came on 7-8 shooting and 4-4 from three point range. Irving's performance was augmented by fellow Team Chuckers DeMarcus Cousins (14 points), Paul George (13 points) and Evan Turner (12 points). Befitting an exhibition game, especially one between the youngest players in the league, Team Chuck shot 69% from the field in the half, including 6-12 from the field.

The scoring for Team Shaq was much more evenly spread out, with Cleveland Cavaliers' forward Tristan Thompson leading with 10 points, with Brandon Knight, Kemba Walker and Norris Cole all adding nine behind him. Team Shaq shot only 4-14 from three.

2012 NBA All-Star Celebrity Game: East Holds 49-31 Halftime Lead

The East holds a commanding 49-31 lead over the West at halftime of the All-Star Celebrity Game, though both teams have had their troubles finishing routine plays. The man of the night so far may be Arne Duncan, who is the United States Secretary of Education. The 47-year-old scored 15 points in the first half to go with five rebounds and five assists. He played for Harvard back in the 1980s and he's done a nice job of putting his basketball chops on display Friday night.
