College Football Recruiting Rankings 2012: Notre Dame Grabs Top 25 Class

National Signing Day 2012 has ended, and with each signing and commitment the landscape for the future of college football is being decided. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish fared well in the process, grabbing 16 commitments from some top talent around the nation. Despite missing out on wide receivers Nelson Agholor and Deontay Greenberry, the Irish still managed to rake in the top 25 class in the nation.

SB Nation's Bud Elliott collected rankings from around the web, and everyone marked Notre Dame among the best of the year. In his own rankings, Elliot placed the Irish at No. 19 overall, and here is a look at what some of the other top recruiting sites did:

Here is what SB Nation's Notre Dam athletics blog, One Foot Down, had to say about the class:

While the overall number of recruits in this class is far below what many expected the staff to sign, it is important to remember that this is an extremely talented (albeit small) class that will address several needs. Notre Dame was able to add an elite QB, two WRs (to help offset the loss of Michael Floyd), and several DBs.

...The margin for error for this class is pretty thin, meaning that several of these players need to make an impact in 2012 and 2013. This class will likely be remembered for the talent lost leading up to NSD (Decker, Darby and Greenberry), but that might not ultimately define the class. There are some very special players in this group and all are very capable players in their own right.

Notre Dame Football Recruiting: 16 Players Included In Brian Kelly's 2012 Class

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish missed out on some impressive recruits today, including two five-star wide receivers in Deontay Greenberry and Nelson Agholor, but they're still walking away from National Signing Day 2012 with 16 signees in hand. Head coach Brian Kelly commented on missing out on Greenberry, noting that he's quite happy with the players that did end up signing:

I used to have a saying about players like that and that was I'd rather play against him for four games than with him for four years.

Ultimately, Notre Dame should be alright even without landing the highly-rated wide receivers. The 16 players that have signed Letters of Intent:

  • Nick Baratti, DB, Tomball, Tex.
  • Chris Brown, WR, Hanahan, S.C.
  • Scott Daly, LS, Downers Grove, Ill.
  • Sheldon Day, DT, Indianapolis, Ind.
  • Justin Ferguson, WR, Pembroke Pines, Fla.
  • Mark Harrell, OL, Charlotte, N.C.
  • Jarron Jones, DT, Rochester, N.Y.
  • Gunner Kiel, QB, Columbus, Ind.
  • Will Mahone, RB, Austintown, Ohio
  • Romeo Okwara, LB, Charlotte, N.C.
  • C.J. Prosise, DB, Petersburg, Virg.
  • KeiVarae Russell, RB, Everett, Wash.
  • Tee Sheppard, DB, Fresno, Calif.
  • Elijah Shumate, DB, East Orange, N.J.
  • Ronnie Stanley, OL, Las Vegas, Nev.
  • John Turner, DB, Indianapolis, Ind.

College Football Recruiting: WR Nelson Agholor Chooses USC Over ND, UF

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish were considered a (very) longshot for Tampa, Fla. five-star WR Nelson Agholor, who was reportedly choosing between the USC Trojans and Florida Gators. And indeed, Agholor chose to go West, spurning in-state schools in order to join the Trojans' stockpile of wide receivers. The Irish will presumably be seeing Agholor down the road, and that only adds insult to him not picking Notre Dame in the first place, not to mention the Irish losing a five-star receiver of their own in Deontay Greenberry.

Here's SB Nation's Bud Elliot on Agholor:

USC is getting a special playmaker. Some see Agholor on defense, but any team using Agholor in a way that denies him the ball in his hands is foolish. Agholor is both fast and quick. He's explosive and easily beats the poor competition he plays in high school. And of course, he can make people miss. That trait should make him a top return man as well.

Agholor will need to adjust to a higher level of competition and add some weight to his frame.

College Football Recruiting: WR Deontay Greenberry Pulls Stunner, Drops Irish For Houston

One of the things that keeps the Signing Day machine churning is when a recruit shocks the college football world by unpredictably signing with one school over another, or by spurning a school at the last minute with whom he had a longterm commitment. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish felt Signing Day's wrath early today when WR Deontay Greenberry— who is rated as either a four-star or five-star commit by the national recruiting services— chose to sign with the Houston Coguars over the Irish, where he had been committed since October.

Greenberry is ranked by Rivals as the No. 49 overall player in the class, and is being compared to Larry Fitzgerald. His defection is undoubtedly a huge blow to Brian Kelly's recruiting class, and it sent shockwaves across the nation:

College Football Recruiting: Sheldon Day, Jarron Jones Lead Irish Official Commits

The fax machines have been humming in South Bend this morning as high school prospects have made their commitments to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish official by sending in their National Letters of Intent. The Irish's two biggest recruits— QB Gunner Kiel and CB Tee Shepard— have been on campus and with the football team for a few weeks already, but Brian Kelly and his staff secured some major names as well today.

The list is led by two defensive linemen ranked as four-star recruits by Rivals. Defensive tackle Jarron Jones is a defensive tackle out of Rochester, New York, and he's rated by Rivals as the No. 199 overall prospect in the country. He's joined by Sheldon Day, Rivals' No. 244 overall prospect, who comes to the Irish from Indianapolis, Ind. The two will join an Irish defensive line that has been reloaded in the past two classes by Kelly.

Here is the full list of players that have faxed their Letters of Intent to Notre Dame this morning:

  • Nick Baratti, DB, Tomball, Tex.
  • Chris Brown, WR, Hanahan, S.C.

College Football Recruiting: Ken Eknamen Spurns Irish

Much of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish's 2012 recruiting class is set in stone, but there is still some fish out there on Signing Day. Unfortunately for Brian Kelly, one of them got reeled in by another school. Four-star LB/DE Ken Ekanmen from Clifton, Va. chose to stay close to home today, selecting the Virginia Tech Hokies over the Irish.

Ekanmen could've joined an Irish class that is heavy on defensive talent, but instead he'll get to be molded by Hokies defensive coordinator Bud Foster, among others. Here is SB Nation's Bill Elliot on what the Irish are missing out on:

The Hokies frequently use undersized, quick defenders, and Ekanem has a chance to play some defensive end as well. Virginia Tech will no doubt use him to get after the passer.

Ekanem was the 15th-highest outside linebacker in the Rivals rankings, trailing Deon Clarke and James Ross.

Ronald Darby Recruiting Update: CB Will Choose Between Notre Dame, Florida State, Clemson And Auburn On Wednesday

Ronald Darby, a 5'11" 176-pound defensive back from Maryland, is all set to announce his college destination on Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. ET on ESPNU. Darby, a former Notre Dame commitment, is expected to choose between the Irish, Florida State, Clemson and Auburn.

SB Nation's national recruiting analyst, Bud Elliott, says that Florida State's track program could prove a trump card in the quest for the speedster's services:

Darby is perhaps the second fastest recruit in this recruiting cycle. The fastest, of course, is Florida State's Marvin Bracy; an Olympic hopeful. Bracy heavily recrutied Darby during the Under Armour All-America Game, and persuaded him to visit Florida State. Florida State's track program is thought to be a major attraction to Darby. None of his other three finalists have an elite track program.

Darby is a 4-star recruit as rated by Rivals.com, and the No. 68 prospect in the class of 2012.

According to the Chicago Tribune, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish have enrolled freshman quarterback and top quarterback prospect Gunner Kiel.
