Notre Dame vs. BYU: QB Everett Golson a game-time decision

Fighting Irish quarterback Everett Golson suffered a concussion last week against Stanford, and his status for Saturday's game against BYU is still uncertain.

Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson cleared post-concussion protocol and participated in practice Wednesday and Thursday, but his status for Saturday's game against BYU is still uncertain. Golson will be a game-time decision vs. the Cougars:

"I won't make a decision on the quarterback until game time," Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly said. "I've prepared all three of the quarterbacks. (Golson) has made progress, we monitor it every single day. These aren't decisions we're making without giving him an opportunity to be evaluated each day.

"He picked up his play from (Wednesday). We'll see. (Friday), we'll have another workout and then we'll make a decision on Saturday."

Golson was injured last week in the fourth quarter against Stanford. He took a helmet-to-helmet hit and did not return to the game. Backup Tommy Rees came on in relief and led the Fighting Irish to a 20-13 overtime victory. Reese completed 4 of 4 passes for 43 yards and the game-winning touchdown.

Before the injury, Golson was 12 of 24 for 141 yards and a touchdown against the Cardinal. He has completed 58.5 percent of his passes for 968 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions in 2012. Despite those less-than-stellar numbers, Kelly claims the decision before Saturday's game will be health-based, not performance-based:

"We're monitoring (Golson's) health," Kelly said. "This is about health and safety. This isn't about who the starting quarterback is."

Notre Dame is 6-0 for the first time since 2002. Kickoff between the Fighting Irish and the Cougars is set for 2:30 p.m. CT. The game will be televised by NBC.
