Joakim Noah's Slur Cost Him $50,000 Due To NBA Fine

Joakim Noah was filmed by ESPN's cameras spewing a homophobic slur in the heat of the moment during Sunday night's loss to the Miami Heat. Even though the Chicago Bulls big man apologized after the game, the NBA has still fined him $50,000 for the comments.

From the NBA's public relations department Twitter account: "Bulls' Noah fined $50,000 for using a derogatory and offensive term from the bench during the Bulls' 96-85 loss to the Heat in Game 3."

It isn't surprising that Noah was fined for the comment, but the amount of the fine is what surprised most initially as Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant was fined $100,000 in nearly the same instance earlier this season. The difference between Noah and Bryant's fine comes due to the fact that Bryant was only talking to a fan and not an official, according to CBSSports.com.

Whether or not its right that directing slurs at homophobic fans is half as bad as verbally abusing officials, as NBA commissioner David Stern seems to imply with the differing amounts, is probably an argument best left for another day.

Joakim Noah Apologizes For Shouting Slur At Heat Fan

The TV cameras caught Joakim Noah of the Chicago Bulls appearing to say, "F**k you, f**got" to a Miami Heat fan during Sunday night's Game 3 of the NBA Eastern Conference Finals, and Noah -- surely mindful that Kobe Bryant received a $100,000 fine for using the same slur -- quickly apologized after the game.

"I apologize," Noah said after the game. "The fan said something to me that I thought was disrespectful, and I got caught up in the moment, and I responded. I said some things that I shouldn’t have said. I was frustrated and I didn’t mean any disrespect to anybody."

It's hard to comprehend why Noah would use the words, "F**k you, f**got," if he didn't mean any disrespect, but whether Noah meant any disrespect is irrelevant: Noah said what he said, and the NBA has already established a precedent with the Bryant fine that the cost of saying what he said is $100,000. Presumably, Noah will get the same fine.

Here's video of the incident:
