Notre Dame was dealt a tough blow on Friday when senior forward Tim Abromaitis tore his right anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during morning practice. According to the Chicago Tribune's report, Abromaitis jump-stopped and his knee gave out, sending him to the ground in pain. Coach Mike Brey released a statement following the announcement:
"We are all disappointed for Tim because of all that he has meant to our program. He has been such a big part of our success over the past three seasons. Tim is such a special young man and an unbelievable representative of Notre Dame both on and off the basketball court."
Abromaitis is coming off a season in which he averaged 15.4 points and 6.1 rebounds per game and earned third-team All-Big East honors; he was a preseason all-conference selection heading into this season.
