Noah's new deal is worth $60 million over five seasons.
Not too long after ESPN Chicago ran a report saying the Bulls were considering adding Joakim Noah to their traded offer for Denver’s Carmelo Anthony—and you can follow the Bulls’ pursuit of Anthony in this StoryStream, if you choose—the network’s Marc Stein now says that the team is determined to keep Noah by locking him up with a contract extension. Writes Stein:
The sides have been negotiating quietly for weeks and sources close to the process say that sufficient progress has been made — although no deal is imminent — to all but guarantee that terms on a five-year extension will be reached before the Halloween deadline.
Though there’s no word yet on what sort of money Noah’s seeking, but it’s clear that right now he’s among the league’s best bargains. This season, the last of his rookie deal, Noah will earn $3.1 million, well below the league average salary of $5.7 million. If his salary were to triple, it wouldn’t be out of line with that of other starting centers in this league.
Noah has career averages of 7.9 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks. However, the 25-year-old’s playing time has increased in each of his professional seasons, which means one can reasonably assume that last year’s numbers—which include 10.7 points, 11 rebounds, and 2.1 blocked shots in 30.1 minutes—are merely a baseline for his performance entering his prime years.
ESPN Chicago is reporting that the Chicago Bulls have initiated discussions with center Joakim Noah regarding a long-term contract. The local ESPN affiliate has a fairly good source: Noah himself, who spoke on the matter - and several others - following an event sponsored by his Noah's Arc charity organization in Queens, New York, Friday night. Noah confirmed that his agent, Donald Dell, has spoken to Bulls' GM Gar Forman. Furthermore, the 6'11" big man in the middle said:
Of course [a long-term deal is] the goal. I'm not really worried about it. I think everything's going to happen with time and at the end of the day, I'm really excited about the upcoming season.
Noah is a fan favorite and a key part of a newly rivitalized Bulls core that's expected to be highly competitive in the Eastern Conference's Central Division. Stay tuned to this StoryStream for further updates on this developing story.
Bulls, Joakim Noah, Agree On Contract Extension
According to ESPN Chicago, the Bulls finally reached an agreement with Joakim Noah on a contract extension after a long summer of negotiations. Noah’s agent, Dan Fegan, says the deal is worth $60 million over five seasons, “plus additional bonuses.”
Noah, 25, has averaged 7.9 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks since the Bulls made him the ninth pick of the 2007 Draft. Last season proved to be his finest so far, with 10.7 points, 11 rebounds, 1.6 blocks, and stout low-post defense.
