Notre Dame, Boston College Extend College Football Series

The South Bend Tribune reports that Notre Dame and Boston College will continue their college football rivalry, dubbed "The Holy War," for the next six seasons.

The series was scheduled to truncate after the Oct. 2 meeting this fall in Chestnut Hill, Mass. But if the preliminary agreement turns into a signed contract, Notre Dame will host its Catholic rival from the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2011, 2016 and 2018. The Irish would then visit BC in 2012, 2015 and 2019.

"(ND athletic director) Jack Swarbrick and I agreed that since Boston College and Notre Dame are the only Catholic institutions that play Division 1-A football, we should continue to play each other over a period of years," said BC AD Gene DeFilippo.

Brian at Boston College Interruption praises the move but adds that this will lead to minor scheduling problems.

Huge news today on the scheduling front. The Holy War between BC and Notre Dame is set to return, with six games added to the schedule starting in 2011.

Of course, this is great news, but it will present some scheduling problems for BC in the short term. The Eagles' 2011 and 2012 schedules have been filled for some time now, so the Irish will be bumping one of these teams off of our non-conference schedule:

2011 - Northwestern, Buffalo, at UCF, UMass
2012 - at Northwestern, at Buffalo, Army, Rhode Island

One should hope that BC ditches their games with I-AA UMass and Rhode Island, but dropping the Buffalo series may also be a possibility.
